Groupe Renault

GGroupe Renault is a French multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in Boulogne-Billancourt. The Renault corporation was founded in 1899 as Société Renault Frères by Louis Renault and his brothers Marcel and Fernand. Louis, a bright, aspiring engineer had already designed and built several prototypes before teaming up with his brothers, who was working for their father’s textile firm.

Today the company produces a wide range of cars and vans, and in the past has manufactured trucks, tractors, tanks, buses/coaches as well as autorail vehicles. During the first world war, the company even turned out trucks, stretchers, ambulances, shells and even the famous FT17 tanks that made a decisive contribution to the final victory. Renault is also well known for its role in motor sport, particularly rallying and Formula 1.

In 2013 Renault was the eleventh biggest automaker in the world by production volume, with about 50% of sales coming from outside of Europe. Renault has a 43.4% controlling stake in Nissan of Japan and together the Renault–Nissan Alliance is the fourth-largest automotive group worldwide. The French government owns a 20% share of Renault as of April 2015.
