BMW is a German auto manufacturer also known as ‘Bavarian Motor Works’. This luxury automobile and motorcycle company was founded in 1916 with headquarters in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. BMW was established as a business entity following a restructuring of the ‘Rapp Motorenwerke’ aircraft manufacturing firm in 1917. After World War I in 1918, the terms of a treaty forced BMW to cease aircraft-engine production and the company consequently shifted to motorcycle & automobile production in the 1920’s
BMW also owns and produces Mini cars and serves as the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. BMW produces motorcycles under BMW Motorrad, and electric cars under the BMW i sub-brand. BMW cars has been assembled in South Africa since 1968 by ‘Praetor Monteerders’ in Rosslyn Pretoria. In 1975 BMW AG took over full shareholding and BMW South Africa (Pty) Ltd. was established as a manufacturer of high performance luxury passenger cars in South Africa.
