Even though the ‘Alaskan’ moniker might sound a bit outlandish and detached from our sunny South African climate, bakkie fans will delight as next year there would be yet another excellent choice in a pick-up market already bursting at the seams.

The Renault Alaskan, named after the cold US state, is a one-tonne pick-up with a stunning look leading with its forceful front-end. The vehicle was already unveiled last year, but recently it has been confirmed that the bakkie is headed to local shores sometime in 2018.

Both robust and comfortable, the Alaskan promises to deliver exceptional driving comfort enhanced by a cutting-edge five-link rear suspension and a tough, fully boxed frame. The Alaskan is a powerful, well designed bakkie which combines outstanding off-road ability with best-in-class fuel economy with the Renault 2.3-litre dCi engine under the boot.

At launch the 2.3-litre diesel engine would be available in two variants:

  • 2.3-litre dCi turbo – 120kW / 400Nm
  • 2.3-litre dCi twin-turbo – 140kW / 450Nm

Renault has a controlling stake in Nissan and together the Renault–Nissan Alliance is one of the largest automotive groups worldwide. The Navara’s identical platform & mechanics are utilized for the Alaskan, of which the chassis is coincidentally also used for Mercedes’ upcoming X-Class Bakkie!

The Alaskan is undoubtable a great looking bakkie, with equally sound mechanics from Nissan under its skin. However, with Hilux, Ranger and Amarok among others ruling the roost locally, Renault might have a tough time convincing the SA consumer. Would you buy one?
