There seems to be no stopping the onslaught of compact crossovers being released into the currently booming SUV market.

Volvo estimates that global premium compact SUV sales are likely to exceed one million by 2020 – a tenfold increase on volumes in 2010. Volvo is well suited to have a piece of the exploding premium SUV pie with their XC90, XC60 and now the all-new XC40!

Unveiled yesterday afternoon in Milan Italy, the XC40, sits below the recently unveiled XC60 and XC90 as the baby & third model in Volvo’s SUV range, and completes Volvo’s line-up for the fast-growing premium SUV segment.

The new XC40 is the first model built on Volvo Cars’ new modular vehicle architecture (CMA), which will underpin all other upcoming cars in the 40 Series including fully electrified vehicles.
“The XC40 is our first entry in the small SUV segment, broadening the appeal of the Volvo brand and moving it in a new direction,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive. “It represents a fresh, creative and distinctive new member of the Volvo line-up”

At launch, the XC40 will be available with a D4 diesel or a T5 petrol four-cylinder Drive-E powertrain:

  • D4 AWD – four-cylinder diesel (140 kW)
  • T5 AWD turbo charged four-cylinder petrol (182 kW)

Both models will benefit from Volvo’s Geartronic eight-speed automatic. Further powertrain options, including a hybridised as well as a pure electric version, will be added later. The XC40 will also be the first Volvo model to be available with Volvo Cars’ new 3-cylinder engine.

Trim levels for the Volvo XC40 include Momentum and R-Design, with an entry-level trim and top-of-the-line Inscription models coming later. Momentum includes standard features such as a 12.3-inch digital instrument display, a 9-inch touch screen infotainment system with navigation and Sensus Connect internet, dual-zone climate control, LED headlamps, rear parking assist, leather heated front seats, and 18-inch alloy wheels. R-Design adds leather and aluminium trim to the inside with black highlights outside, among other things.

Of course, being a Volvo there are a multitude of safety features & technology that the company says draw from its bigger XC60 & XC90 siblings, including Volvo Cars’ Pilot Assist system, City Safety, Run-off Road protection and mitigation, Cross Traffic alert with brake support and the 360° Camera that helps drivers manoeuvre their car into tight parking spaces.

Volvo is also on a serious mission to de-clutter their cars’ interiors hence the XC40 offers a radically new approach to storage inside the car. There is more functional storage space in the doors and under the seats, a special space for phones including inductive charging, a fold-out hook for small bags and a removable waste bin in the tunnel console.

With rivals in the form of the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Range Rover Evogue and soon to launch Jaguar E-Pace, the XC40 faces stiff competition, but by the looks of things this baby Volvo seems more than up for a fight!
