Yes, you could argue that a Cayenne pepper is only rated as ‘mild’ on the Scoville chilli scale, and you would be right.

Some might say, in terms of exterior styling at least, that the new Porsche Cayenne is rather ‘mild’ or underwhelming. The new SUV features very subtle design changes and if you are not a die-hard Porsche fan, you might have trouble distinguishing this 3rd generation from the predecessor!

Quick test: Can you spot the difference? Better yet, do you know which one is which?

The Cayenne is the most important model for Porsche’s bottom-line. Since its introduction in 2002, the Cayenne has sold over 750,000 units worldwide, of which half a million were the previous 2nd-gen model. If you are in the market for a Porsche, there’s a good change it would be this one… Right?

This might well be the reason why the Germans didn’t change the looks or overall size too much for this new model. Look past the exterior, however, and there’s a lot of new tech & advancements going on elsewhere.

Even though Porsche’s 3rd Gen SUV is instantly recognizable as a Cayenne, there are some sleek visual enhancements. The car has a more horizontal look to the front grille and the taillights. More pronounced bonnet lines hint powerful engines underneath, while a roof spoiler above the sloped rear window indicates the car’s sportiness.

The new Cayenne grew 75mm in length over the previous generation but has the same wheelbase. The enlarged exterior dimensions convert into more interior room, and cargo space is up a full 15 percent according to Porsche.

In spite of the larger envelope, the Cayenne S sheds up to 65kg versus the 2nd Gen (the base Cayenne drops 55kg). All the exterior body panels are made from aluminium, along with the floor pan and “virtually all the chassis components” Porsche says. There’s also a lithium-polymer starter battery, which shaves a further 10kg off the gross weight!

The power increases coupled with lower weights has a significant effect on the Cayenne’s performance stats. When the new Porsche SUV becomes available in mid-2018, it will be offered in base Cayenne and Cayenne S models as follows:

  • Base: Turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 (254kW / 450N.m Torque) – The Base model will hit 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds – 1.7 seconds quicker than before.
  • Cayenne S: Bi-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 (328kW / 550N.m Torque) – The Cayenne S reaches 100km/h in 4.9 seconds – 0,5 seconds quicker than before.

A revised 8-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is all-wheel drive.

There is also a new option is called ‘Porsche Surface Coated Brake’ which uses a special tungsten-carbide coating on the steel brake rotors. Porsche says that improves the brakes’ friction coefficient but reduces brake dusting.

Interior-wise, the new Cayenne took a big step forward. It ditches most of the old car’s physical buttons for screens and touch-sensitive panels to use all of the controls, similar to the new Panamera models, and the centre piece of the dash is now a much wider 12.3-inch touchscreen panel.
