The 5 Best Car Movies of All Time!

A ‘car movie’ can mean many things — from a fast-paced track racing film, a getaway with many car chases or just a movie that’s set among beautiful cars… surely all of these can qualify as a ‘car movie’. More than anything, we think it should be a film where a car plays a key role in depicting the relationship people have with their cars and their passion for horsepower.

Nonetheless, with it being weekend and all, we thought this might be a good time to take a step back and reflect on some of the best car movie releases of the last few decades. By no means is this meant to be an all-encompassing breakdown of what makes each movie good, it’s just a simple list of the best car movies ever. The movies are ranked… er… well… bv us!

Buckle up, drop the hammer and enjoy!

1 – Days of Thunder (1990)

Days of Thunder (1990)

Tom Cruise in his heyday, plays stock-car driver Cole Trickle, a young hotshot who has loads of talent but no conception of how to channel that talent in to racing success. Being a stock-car driver who enters the world of NASCAR, his arrogance gets him into trouble with not only other drivers, but his own team as well.

A rivalry between rookie Cole Trickle (Tom Cruise) and veteran teammate Rowdy Burns quickly gets out of hand and ends up with both of them being seriously injured in competition. While in hospital, Cole’s spirits are restored by a romance with neurosurgeon Dr. Claire Lewicki (Nicole Kidman), and Cole decides to race his teammate’s car in the Daytona 500.

This was Kidman’s first American film. She and Cruise started dating while the movie was being shot, and got married six months after the film’s release. This is the first of three films to star both Cruise and Kidman (the other two being Far and Away and Eyes Wide Shut).

An excellent car movie with a hot soundtrack featuring Whitesnake and a lot of tyre smoke – What’s not to like? This one is Driveit’s all-time favourites!

2 – Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)

Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)

Gone in 60 seconds is an impossibly slick, Jerry Bruckheimer–produced, star-studded heist film featuring Nicolas Cage playing retired master car thief Randall “Memphis” Raines.
Memphis abandoned his life of crime long ago, but after his brother Kip (Giovanni Rabisi) lands into trouble with a stolen-car syndicate boss, he finds he has no choice but to return to what he does best, stealing cars!

In order to save his brother’s life, it all comes down to one night, stealing 50 swanky cars in 96 minutes. Memphis must get a gang together for a one night ‘boost’ to grab all the cars while avoiding apprehension by Castlebeck, the auto theft cop who trailed him years before. His teammates include Robert Duvall and Angelina Jolie.

It’s a long shot and its one hell of a long night – The film is shallow and with ridiculous car set pieces, but remains an utterly enjoyable action-packed-thrill-ride!

3 – Need for Speed (2014)

Need for Speed (2014)

Aaron Paul of Breaking Bad fame stars in this one. Based on the series of video games by Electronic Arts, the film stars street racer Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), a mechanic, who races muscle cars in an underground circuit to make ends meet.

With his business struggling, he is forced to partner with wealthy but deceitful Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). However, Dino frames Tobey for a crime that sends him to prison for two years.
When Tobey is released from prison he is out and bent on revenge. He then sets off to race cross-country, as a way of avenging his friend’s death at the hands of a rival racer Dino. His only chance to take down Dino is to beat him in a high-stakes race. But to get there in time, he must successfully evade an army of cops and bounty hunters.

This movie features a lot of driving and beautiful driving scenes makes this a feast for any petrol head’s eyes! This more than makes up for the story which lacks a bit of substance…

4 – Rush (2013)

Rush (2013)

A docu-style film about the ’70s rivalry between Formula One racers Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) and James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth). Charismatic English playboy James Hunt and Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda are pitted against one another as elemental opposites in this burn-up-the-track racing movie.

The film features over-the-top sequences that capture the danger and allure of racing, with Hunt and Lauda pushing themselves to the breaking point of physical and mental endurance during which their rivalry, and friendship develops.

It’s a great film that is often overlooked.

5 – Drive (2011)

Drive (2011)

The film stars Ryan Gosling as an unnamed Hollywood stunt driver moonlighting as a getaway driver for criminals.

Only known as ‘driver’ he has no other name and no other life, just a cool-cat character who exploits his driving skills and knowledge of the streets to constantly outsmart his pursuers.
Driver quickly grows fond of his neighbor, Irene (Carey Mulligan) and when her debt-laden husband is released from prison, he is hired to take part in what turns out to be a botched million-dollar heist.

The movie is a fascinating blend of pop influences from the ’70s petrol heads, style of the ’80s and the hip satire of the millennial era. Some would call it a mindless action picture laden with CGI, crashes and mayhem, but with its hyper-stylized blend of violence, cool soundtrack and striking car and driving imagery, Drive is definitely worth the watch if you are a car enthusiast!
