Tesla’s Model 3 has been officially launched over a week ago already. At first, we did not plan to do an article about the car seeing that it won’t be available in South Africa. However, even though it is not very official, Tesla’s Musk tweeted last year that the Model 3 will be included in the order page for SA, so we decided now would be as good a time as ever to do a quick reveal about the car.

Musk’s April 2016 tweet:
“Adding several more countries to Model 3 order page. Check for details but will include India, Brazil, SA, SK, New Zealand, Singapore & Ireland.”

If all goes to plan, the Tesla Model 3 could arrive locally by late 2018 or 2019.

Astoundingly, at the launch event in the US a few days ago, the Model 3 already had over half a million advance reservations as he handed over the first 30 cars to employee buyers.

At Tesla’s California factory, Musk showed off the $35,000 (R465,000) base vehicle with a range of 350 km on a charge. A longer-range version of the car is priced at $44,000 (R585,000) and will reach 500 km on a single charge according to Tesla.

The Model 3 will be similar in size to the Audi A4 or the BMW 3 Series, which would put it in the medium-sized sedan segment. If the Model 3 were to be priced in SA similar to the above, it could be a real contender to the established luxury sedans on local shores.

The Model 3 is a smaller, less complex and more affordable electric car than Tesla’s highly desirable Model S. It was designed and built to be the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle and is a critical step in Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.

Like every Tesla vehicle, Model 3 combines range, performance, safety and technology. Intelligent design maximizes interior space to comfortably fit five adults and all of their gear. The high-efficiency powertrain ($44,000 version) provides zero to 100km/h acceleration in as little as 5.2 seconds whereas the base version takes about 5.7 seconds to reach 100km/h.

Tesla’s Musk acknowledged that it faces major hurdles living up to the Model 3 hype. The 500,000 vehicles Tesla promises to produce in 2018 are nearly six times more than its 2016 production volume.

If Tesla were to succeed in producing and selling 500,000 cars per year, they would likely outsell most other mid-size luxury sedans including BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the US.

While you cannot have a Tesla in SA yet, perhaps you are interested in a regular fuel-burning mid-size luxury saloon in the meantime?

Love the Tesla brand and the Model 3 – Now, if they would only redesign the grill with more detail so that the real-life version would look less like a scale model!
(It’s understandable that aerodynamics is of the utmost importance with electric vehicles, but a few horizontal lines in the grill, won’t make such a big difference!)
