Earlier this month, BMW released its latest Active Hybrid vehicle. The German carmaker already has a significant amount of hybrids in its line-up and now it’s adding another one. So, it’s not exactly a car, but with 90 Nm torque on tap, it sure sounds like this is the right forum to talk about it!

To put the bike’s torque into perspective, have a look at the Top 10 cheapest cars in South Africa, and you will notice that it is about the same as 4 of the vehicles on the list!

  • Chery QQ3 0.8 TE – 70 Nm
  • Suzuki Celerio 1.0 – 90 Nm
  • Renault Kwid 1.0 – 91 Nm
  • Kia Picanto 1.0 LS – 94 Nm

Considering the e-Bike’s cost of around R55k, something special is to be expected though. BMW’s new Active Hybrid e-bike has a small, but high-performance battery fully integrated into the frame. It also has an innovative saddle designed specifically for e-bikes to provide comfort, safety and ‘electrifying riding pleasure’ in BMW’s own words. It is equipped with a comprehensively revised drive concept, which makes for a significant power boost.

The electric motor can be activated as required to supplement the rider’s pedal power. Producing a power output of 250W (Yes, Watt not Kilowatt!) and 90Nm of torque, the motor injects extra zing and serves up the agility for which the BMW brand is renowned.

Running out of energy after pedalling? No need to worry as the bike’s removable 504 Wh battery has enough juice for 100 kilometres. The rider can adjust the degree of pedal assistance via an electronic display and four different power modes (from ECO (+50%) to TURBO (+275%)) can be selected up to a maximum 25 km/h. In addition, the micro USB socket and Bluetooth function allow customers to hook their smartphone up to the bike.
