The All-new BMW Z4 roadster concept was just revealed at the prestigious Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach, California.

Dynamic, progressive and an irresistible purveyor of thrills, the BMW Concept Z4 boasts supple and compact proportions. The attention-grabbing concept design is more than just a show car; it is a realistic glimpse of the Z4 series-production version, as well as a hint of BMW’s future design language.

According to Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design, what you see here is very close to what you’ll see in a BMW showroom in 2018.

Van Hooydonk – who has spent his entire car-design career at BMW since starting in 1992 – draws a distinction between concepts like this, which are a realistic impression of an upcoming vehicle, and BMW’s ‘Vision’ concepts, which give a much more imaginary, forward-looking idea of how BMW could tackle future design issues.

He says “Stripping the car back to the bare essentials allows the driver to experience all the ingredients of motoring pleasure with supreme directness.” He added that one of the chief goals with the new design language was making it ‘cleaner.’ Over the years modern car designers had been adding ever more lines and creases, but the new BMW language will have fewer of them.

The BMW Concept Z4 adopts classical roadster design cues, such as a long wheelbase, a low-slung, stretched silhouette and a compact rear end. The car also features a completely new ‘facial expression’ with a much larger & wider kidney grille design which further hints at BMW’s new contemporary design language.

The Z4 roadster is codenamed G29, (Click here to see what BMW’s code names mean) and the car is being developed in a joint engineering programme between BMW and Toyota, which will sell a coupé version as the Supra.

BMW will retain the Z4 name for its future roadster, rather than using Z5 as previously rumoured, because Z5 does not fit in with its naming structure, which only uses even numbers for performance models.
